Contact Sports

There are specific demands and training principles that must be understood in order to train for contact sports such as rugby union and rugby league. The demands of the game include short sprints, slow jogging, acceleration, using upper body strength, fast striding, jumping, walking, changing direction, rapid recovery, and the ability to interchange between any of these activities on demand. As a result, all of the energy-producing systems within the body are placed under a certain degree of stress, and thus contact sports athletes need to be all-round athletes.

During a high level game a player on average will cover between 6-12 km. Approximately 80% of that distance will be covered at around 70-80% of maximum speed with the remaining 20% split between full speed and jogging. Coupled with these aerobic and anaerobic demands are strength demands that occur during a tackle.

Our coaches will develop training programs so you will be fit enough and durable enough to handle these demands in order to play well and to fully enjoy the game.
