Functional Movement Screening

What is Functional Movement Screening?

The Functional Movement Screening (FMS) is an innovative assessment system used to evaluate the quality movement patterns required in every sport. Movement is a combination of mobility and stability across the joints. In many sports there are high correlations between acceleration, deceleration, side stepping, reaching, fending and single leg mobility and stability. The whole concept of FMS is to improve an athletes ability to generate maximum power through an optimal range of motion.

It has been observed that many athletes who perform at very high levels during activities are unable to perform these simple movements which are the focal point of all sporting movements. Sacrificing efficient movements for inefficient movement in order to perform at high levels could result in poor movement patterns leading to poor biomechanics which ultimately result in greater risk of injuries and decreased performance output.

Functional Movement Screening Assessment

The FMS assessments places the athlete in positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and stability is not utilised. The movements that make up FMS assessments look simple but require good flexibility and control. An athlete who is unable to perform a movement correctly, either by showing a major limitation within one of the movement patterns or demonstrating an obvious difference between the function of the left and right side, provides information that may be the key to (1) reducing the risk of chronic injuries, (2) improving overall sports performance or (3) generating power within the movement patterns.

The 15 minute consultation assesses the seven fundamental movement patterns that are required for every sport. Following the assessment an individual detailed report is generated that highlights movement limitations, muscles imbalances and flexibility concerns. Included in the report is a FMS Training Program that addresses the identified areas of concern and a practical  demonstration of the FMS Training Program from an Optimal Sports FMS Coach.

Follow-Up Assessment

We recommend athletes to complete a FMS followup consultation every 6 weeks. The 15 minute follow up consultation includes a review of the initial movement patterns and introduces advancements in the movement sequences for each movement pattern. Following the assessment an individual detailed report is generated that highlights improvements and any new movement limitations, muscles imbalances and flexibility concerns. Included with the report is a FMS Training Program.
